Super powers, by David J Schwartz
I saw this book a while ago in Waterstones, I wanted to buy it but Josh stopped me [for them of you that don’t know I have this thing where I spend lots of money on junk I don’t even need. I need help really…] well I had been trying to remember the name of the book for ages and I just couldn’t think of it. I went back to get it but it had been moved so I had no idea to if I would ever find this book. Untill the Bible that is SFX [I live by that magazine] did a review about the book giving it 4 out of 5 stars. So yay I finally got the name of the book. I jumping for joy with this.
Well I went into town to buy the book and I couldn’t find it I felt like crying. Untill Holly found me the book. I didn’t get any points on my card though as I left it at home. Damn Waterstones card not being with me when ever I buy junk.
The book is about five college friends [
Then once they all got drunk and blanked out and Caroline and Charlie ended up sleeping together, which they both regretted after.
Well anyhow they all wake up with powers. Jack could run beyond fast think Flash. Charlie could read thoughts think Emma Frost. Mary Beth was uber strong think Hulk just not all green and crack. Harriet could turn invisible think Mrs Fantastic and then Caroline who could fly Superman.
Sure the powers they had gotten where cliché but the point of the book isn’t in fact the powers they got it was more the way they used them and the effects of them using them.
The book was largely based around conspires of the government the army and so forth. They did what most do they formed a group called All Stars [well because Caroline made there costumes with stars on there chests] they went around saving the lives or stopping banks getting robbed and such. There was not big bad here. No Super Villain. Which was a nice change to the comics where there is always a Super bad Villain with powers.
Everything was going epic for them. They never got caught they saved lives and junk they where walking on air. Until people got hurt when they where trying to stop a joy ride. Jack saved the people in the house as it blew up in flames. However the women was burnt as he saved her. Her husband started the big campaign to get the All Stars to get arrested and show them self’s even though they would be dead if Jack hadn’t saved them. Whatever.
Well the books was full of lots of bends and turns. If you look at the cover you wouldn’t think the book would have such deep subjects like rape, September 11th, cancer and so forth but it did. It didn’t dumb down the reader. You felt like the All Stars where real you could feel what they where going through. Jacks farther was dyeing, Jack was full of life whilst his farther wasn’t. You could feel the pain Jack was going though during this time.
Mary Beth was told she was in the wrong direction in her studies and had to choice what was right for her along with seeing her Mother who died giving birth to her, her mother was only 16 or something. And in her head.
Caroline was distant from her mother who was moving all the time and never saw her. Whilst Harriet was dealing with her past of being raped and have never told anyone and she felt like she was just fading away. Her farther Ray was a cop investigate the All stars.
Charlie had to find him self. In order for him to be sain with his gift. Whilst all this was happening they tried to find out if this had happened before if anyone else had gotten powers like this. And it had. Years ago.
The ending I would say was possibly the best written part of the book. I am not ashamed to said it made me get tears.
The ending again pulled around the government controls everything thing. One of the characters died and body was missing, one was locked up then there history was wiped and they went missing and the others where on the run.
It was done with Charlie telling the Reporter what had happened during there All Stars days. It was put together brilliantly. And I would recommend people to give it a try.
